An intense earthquake, measuring 6.4 in magnitude, shook the region in Colombia, causing widespread chaos. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the quake, with its epicenter located 115 km (71.46 miles) deep.

The earthquake wreaked havoc on entire communities, particularly Cartago city, home to around 134,000 residents. The tremors originated approximately 5 km southeast of Cartago. Pereira, a city 22 km southwest with a population of nearly 467,000, also faced the brunt of the quake's force.
